Hydraulic Capstan Winches
If you work in Oregon’s toughest industries, such as forestry, construction, marine, and even utilities, then you have likely thought of the best way to haul, anchor, or lift heavy lines without compromising safety or control.
Capstan winch stands as the best bet. They feature a rotating drum around which rope passes. This allows for controlled, continuous pulling without spooling.
Capstan winches are valued for their precision, strength, and flexibility. They operate with consistent force regardless of rope length. This makes them effective for long-distance pulls or confined spaces.
When powered hydraulically, the benefits multiply. Hydraulic capstan winches provide smooth, variable control and high torque output. In an event where electric options fail due to remote sites, uneven loads, and rough weather, these tools perform.
At Hydraulic Winch Co., we engineer hydraulic capstan systems that are powerful, reliable, and suited for real-world job demands.

-
Efficiency and Performance
These capstan winches offer steady power. They handle ropes and start up quickly. That means less time setting up and more time getting things done. If you are anchoring or using capstans for pulling fiber optic cable, the job moves faster with hydraulic technology.
-
Durability and Reliability
You need equipment that lasts, especially in industries where conditions are harsh and reliability is critical. Every hydraulic capstan winch we produce is constructed from durable materials designed to withstand heavy use and extreme weather. Whether you choose a capstan anchor winch or opt for a smaller capstan model, you can count on consistent performance and a long service life from Hydraulic Winch Co. products.
-
Safety and Control
If you work in telecom, utility, or construction settings where capstans for pulling fiber optic cable are common, maintaining control is critical. A sudden surge in tension or line slack can cause serious equipment damage or injury.
At Hydraulic Winch Co., we understand that safety will always be the priority, regardless of the quality or performance of your equipment. Our capstan winches come with features like emergency stop buttons and tension controls. They also help protect your team and gear. If you need a capstan winch for sale, our equipment checks all the boxes: power, safety, and long-term value.

L Series Capstan Winches
The large capstan on the L series is advantageous when working at higher speeds or with larger diameter ropes.
The LH is the heavy duty version. The LS version is the same basic winch with a lighter and less powerful drive unit. The LS series is well suited for higher speed applications where less capacity is needed.
L series capstan winches have the following features:
-
- Large 11 inch diameter drum with a 7 inch diameter x 7 inch wide working surface.
- Fully machined working surface to minimize rope fraying and wear.
- Space saving design with a large portion of the drive unit located inside the capstan drum.
- Large heavy duty, slow turning hydraulic motors for a long life.
- Pressure fed hydraulic lubrication eliminates maintenance and internal corrosion.
- Three mounting styles are available for all models. The model number suffix indicates the type of mount.
LH 7-F
- Fixed mount version. Also available with RF or RC mounts.
- Dimensions: 12 1/4 in. high x 11 1/4 in. wide x 15 3/4 in. long.
- Weight: 110 lbs
LH 7-RF
- RF style rotating base. The RF pivot is offset to the capstan. This allows the capstan to swing out so the rope can clear vehicles or fixtures.
- Base rotates 360 degrees
- 60 positions. Base locks in 6 degree increments
- The winch can be lifted off of the base when the locking pin is removed.
- Dimensions: 14 1/2 in. high x 11 1/4 in. wide x 17 in. long.
- Weight: 125 lb.
LHB 7-RC
- The RC mount has the same features as the RF version, except the pivot is located in the center of the winch. The RC requires less room to rotate 360 degrees. RF or F mounts are also available on the LHB models.
- The LHB series have a spring applied, hydraulically released, multi-disc wet brake. All of the L series winches brake hydraulically. Internal hydraulic clearances can allow the capstan to slowly creep back. The brake holds the capstan so the load can be held for an extended period of time without drifting out of position.
- The spring brake also provides additional protection in the event of a hydraulic failure.
- Comes standard with a manifold style mount dual counterbalance valve. See Winch Options page for more information on counterbalance valves.
- The brake is located inside the capstan as a space saving feature.
- Reversible. Brake and counterbalance valves operate in both directions.
- A case drain is required on LHB versions only.
- Dimensions: 16 in. high x 12 in. wide x 16 in. long.
- Weight: 140 lb.
LS 5-RC
- All LS models are also available with RF or F mounts.
- The ratchet type action locks the capstan in the reverse direction only. The winch brakes and holds the load hydraulically. The drum lock eliminates any hydraulic creep and allows the load to be held for an extended period of time without drifting out of position. See Winch Options page for more information about the drum lock.
- Without the drum lock option, the back rim of the LS Capstans have no notches and are smooth like the LH Capstans.
- Dimensions: 16 in. high (without drum lock option) x 12 in. wide x 15 1/2 in. long.
- Weight: 116 lb. (without drum lock).

** Pressure relief settings are adjusted to not exceed maximum winch operating pressure.
- Line pull and speed are based on 5/8 in. dia. rope.
- We recommend selecting the lowest practical operating pressure. This will increase the life of the hydraulic components.
